Burlington High School Hosts Successful Air Quality Symposium
On April 16th, some BHS sophomores and juniors presented their findings at a symposium highlighting the air quality. This is under the Air Quality InQuiry (AQIQ) program, a community-focused initiative through a partnership with the CU Boulder Mechanical Engineering Department.
The AQIQ program represents an innovative approach to environmental science education, combining academic rigor with real-world community engagement. Over the past three years, high school students have utilized specialized air quality monitors—often called "pods"—to collect and analyze atmospheric data from their local area. This hands-on approach allows students to develop practical research skills while contributing meaningful environmental data to their community.
The program's success owes much to the dedication of Mr. Shane Walkinshaw (Superintendent), Mr. Jarrod Bessire (Principal), and Mrs. Venus Rotoni (Biology Teacher), whose vision and initiative have sustained the AQIQ program and enabled student participation in meaningful scientific research. This year’s CU Boulder’s mentors were mechanical engineering students Bela Voglund, and Anh Nguyen, who provided invaluable guidance and expertise through the high school researchers throughout the program.
Here are the winners of the said event.
Best Poster – “Effects of different Floors”, Brandon McDaniel, Jandri Barkhuizen, and Paige Bessire
People’s Choice Awardees
“VOC Emissions from different baked goods”, Isis Esquivel and Evis Esquivel
“Check your air!”, Lilliana Reed

We’re celebrating our 3rd and 4th grade students for finishing CMAS testing, with just a few makeups remaining!
Our students showed focus, perseverance, and a lot of grit this past week. We also want to thank our families for prioritizing attendance, it made a big difference in keeping testing smooth and consistent for everyone.
A huge shoutout to our staff for the preparation, encouragement, and support you provided leading up to and throughout testing. Your work sets our students up for success.
And a special thank you to our high school wrestlers for sharing their “getting ready to compete at state” message at our assembly, and to our cheerleaders for bringing the energy and pep on Monday morning. Those moments helped set the tone for a strong week.

This is a reminder for 8th grade families to submit a baby photo for the “Guess Who?” section in this year's yearbook.
The cost is $20 per student and the extended deadline to submit a clear baby photo is Thursday, April 23rd. You can turn in the photo and payment to the school office.
This is a fun opportunity to be included in a memorable section of the yearbook!
Questions? Contact Mrs. Harrel at 719-346-5440.
