Burlington Elementary School has been named a 2025–2026 Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School, a recognition awarded to campuses that demonstrate a strong commitment to building relationships, fostering belonging, and creating a positive learning environment for students.
Out of more than 10,000 schools implementing the Capturing Kids’ Hearts process across the country, approximately 600 campuses were selected for this honor, placing Burlington Elementary among a small group of schools recognized for their consistent impact on students and staff.
While the award is certainly worth celebrating, school leaders emphasize that it reflects something deeper than a single moment.
“This recognition isn’t about one event or one program,” said Principal Matt Kastner. “It’s about the systems and daily commitment our staff brings to building strong relationships with students. That consistency over time is what creates a place where kids feel safe, known, and ready to learn.”
Capturing Kids’ Hearts focuses on strengthening connections between students and educators, with the belief that meaningful relationships are the foundation for both academic success and personal growth. At Burlington Elementary, that work shows up in everyday practices, from morning greetings and classroom routines to shared expectations and a school-wide focus on respect and responsibility.
The impact of that work is visible to those who walk through the building. As one community visitor shared, “The compassion and genuine connection that I witnessed today rises above what I have experienced in other schools.”
The recognition is based on several factors, including staff commitment to the routines, positive feedback survey from students and teachers about school culture, evidence of impact, and observations from national CKH representatives.
For Burlington Elementary, the honor highlights years of intentional work to build a school culture where students feel a strong sense of belonging.
“When you walk through our building, you can feel it,” Kastner said. “Our staff has worked hard to create an environment where students are supported, challenged, and encouraged to grow. That doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of a lot of people doing the right things, every day.”
As the school looks ahead, leaders say the focus will remain the same.
“We’re proud of this recognition,” Counselor Leslie Meier added, “but more importantly, we’re committed to continuing the work that got us here. Our goal is always to make Burlington Elementary a place where every student wants to be and has the opportunity to succeed.”
