September News Article – Julie Anderson - physical education pre-k
through 4th grade. This year Burlington Elementary will team up with the NFL to "Play 60". That means that every child is challenged to play (be physically active) for 60 minutes every day. This is not
as difficult as it sounds, and I highly encourage parents to join their children to achieve this goal. If your child takes advantage of the built in opportunities during their school schedule to play and be physically active he/she may only need 15 more minutes at home to complete their 60 minute challenge.

Most children have three 15 minute recess times durin the day plus physical education class from three to five times per week. Those minutes can all be added together to equal 60 minutes or more each day. The activities must be "heart healthy" activities that require using the large muscle groups in your body.
A simplified way to look at an activity to see if it is "heart healthy" is to see if you sweat, your heart beats fast and you breathe hard. If all three of these things happen then you know you are doing a great thing for your heart to make it stronger.

Activities like walking, jogging, biking, swimming, skate boarding, tennis and even tag are great examples of "heart healthy" activities. Playing X-Box, surfing the web and watching TV are definitely not. The Morning Mile is a new program that allows students to start running or walking at 7:30 AM every day before school starts. Participants log their miles, chart them on maps and earn small prizes. This is one more great way to build up to 60 minutes of activity per day. Join your children in the fun! Set yourself some personal goals, and we'll all get in shape together.
