    Homework Policy

I feel nightly homework serves three important purposes.

  • It provides extra practice on skills taught in class
  • Allows parents to see what skills their child is working on in school and allows parents to assist them
  • Builds responsibility and creates a routine for the child when the homework is needed to be completed

All students have been given a black plastic homework folder that must come home nightly and be returned with completed work the following morning.  For homework, students will have a new spelling list each week to practice at home, and they will be expected to read every night for a minimum of 20 minutes.  I ask that parents initial their child’s reading log nightly so I know the reading was completed.  A few nights a week, students will be asked to complete a reading or math practice sheet as additional homework.  Students will be rewarded for the daily completion of their homework by staying on green and earning bonus bucks.  If they do not return their homework or they forget to have their reading log signed, they will be asked to move their nametag to the yellow apple.

Grading Policy

In my classroom, students will participate in reviewing their performance on assessments and quizzes in the core subject areas of reading, writing, and math on a regular basis.  They will also be expected to reflect on their scores and set goals with the teacher to make improvements in their performance.  Grades will be posted in EduStar on a weekly basis for parents to monitor their child’s progress.

Please note: Our third grade team is currently working on improved methods for relaying student grades to parents, so this process is currently under construction and may change throughout the year! Please feel free to call me with any questions or concerns about your child’s grades.

Parent Helpers

Parent helpers are greatly appreciated and welcomed into our classroom.  I will be asking parents to sign up and organize classroom parties for the following holidays:  Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day.  All classroom parties will begin at 2:00 and will end at 3:00.
There are also many opportunities for you to help out in the classroom. Areas where I would appreciate help include: working with students in reading, reviewing math facts and star word lists, laminating or cutting out projects, field trip chaperones, pulling and replacing books in the book room, and organizing monthly book order forms. Be sure to list days and times you are available so I can have items ready for you when you come in our classroom.

Show and Tell – Birthdays - Snacks

       .
I allow students to keep a water bottle with an attached lid in the classroom so they may stay hydrated throughout the day.  I will ask them to take water bottles home every Friday to be cleaned.  Students will also have a chance to eat a healthy snack in the mornings after specials.  Please make sure they bring a healthy snack: NO “sweets” please…. I want them to have brainpower not sugar highs!

Use the following questions to help support your child's use of reading strategies during nightly reading at home.

Predict/Infer

What do you think the book is going to be about?

What do you already know about this topic?

What do you think might happen next?

Did any of your predictions come true?

Which ones?

How do you know?

Question

What questions do you have about the topic your are about to read?

What questions do you have about the story or about what you've learned?

Where can you find the answer?

Can you point to the answer or do you need to make an inference by finding clues to help you answer your question?

Monitor/Clarify

Does what you're reading make sense?

Do you understand the meaning of that word?
Can you think of another word or synonym to use in its place?

What picture do you have created in your mind after reading this page/chapter?

Monitor/Clarify Phonics for Decoding

Can you blend the word parts or letter sounds together to read the word?

Is it a word you know?

Does it make sense in what you're reading?

What else can you try?

Summarize

Fiction

Tell me about what you've read so far in your own words.
Who were the main characters?

Where and when did the story take place?

Can you tell me the events in order?

What was the main problem in the story and how was it solved?

Nonfiction

What did you learn about in your reading?

Can you tell me two main ideas you learned about your topic?

What details can you find in the text to support those main ideas?

Evaluate

How do you feel about what you read?

Do you agree or disagree with the author? Why?

Do you think the author did a good job making the story believable? Why?

Did you learn something interesting or new?
