Well, time has flown by!! This month we will be doing many new activities as well as reviewing concepts that have already been taught so far this year.

In math, we are continuing to do problem solving and work on addition and subtraction facts. We plan on going more “in-depth” on time and money this month. Remember, we expect first graders to tell time by the hour and half hour and identify and know the value of the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter as well as count out combinations of pennies, nickels, and dimes by the end of the year. Any extra work you can do with your child at home will be helpful.

In reading, we continue to work on fluency as well as comprehension and retelling of a story. Remember to work on the different strategies/targets at home when having your child read to you and always ask questions or have them retell the story to you when they are finished. We continue to work on short and long vowels, blends, and diagraphs, compound words, contractions and plurals. We will be introducing special vowels, antonyms, synonyms and controlling (bossy) letters.

Just as a reminder, please read every night with your child. We need you to sign the slips and have your child return the reading slips every single day! Students should be reading their leveled readers several times to develop fluency. The leveled readers have within their pages the opportunity to apply the reading skill(s) we are working on, as well as ones that we have already covered. Reading other books is a great idea! The progress students make in their reading development depends a great deal on the amount of actual reading they do at the right level for them. Our day in the classroom includes a variety of reading experiences, but nothing can replace the time a student spends reading with the most important people in their life! Thanks for your help!!!

Our Valentine’s Party is on Thursday, February 11, 2010 from 2:00 to 3:00. The following parents signed up to assist; in Mrs. Rider’s Class: Sandy Erker, Cindy Ordonez, Ginger Schulte, Adrianna Gutierrez, Veronica Swindle, Brenda Ridder, and Stephanie Clemans; in Mrs. Woller’s Class: Bernadine Sanchez, Malissa Fernandez, Kevin Brown, Rhonda Martinez, ChaCha Hernandez, Cassie Rider, Michelle Hubbard, and Mayra Quiroz. Please note party assignments on the attached sheet. Thanks for your help!
